Registration for the second European Junior Water Programme (EJWP) starting in June 2020 is open. The two-year programme is offering a boost to young water professionals pursuing a career in European water management. The first group of water professionals started in March 2019. Since that date eight junior water professionals from different Member States started gaining international experience through working in international teams, joining international conferences and field visits.

Field visit in Italy

From 9-13 December the first group enjoyed their third field visit. This time they were received by consulting agency Isle Utilities in Brescia, Italy. Part of the programme was a masterclass on urban resilience and innovative wastewater treatment. In Italy also two new research projects started. One group will find out how different European countries tackle urban resilience to climate change. Another group is aiming for carbon reduction in wastewater treatment commissioned by Welsh Water.

International research

The junior water professionals already finished a project on water use awareness among European Wine Producers. For this research they made use of using a simplified Water Footprint Assessment methodology. They also came up with a creative but feasible vision for the water systems of the future. The case came from a Dutch Water Authority.

Advantages for employers

Participants of the EJWP not only work on cases provided by third parties but they also work together on assignments submitted by their employers. The participants learn a lot themselves, but the organizations where they work for can also benefit from their participation. The water professionals extend their international network and this is an advantage for companies looking for an international market.
