The Agency Catalana del Agua (ACA) reports Catalonia in Spain reused in 2014 about 25 hm3 grey water. The water was reused for irrigation, golf courses, cleaning streets, recharging aquifers and industrial use. Catalonia estimates the available amount of water could increase until 153 hm3 and therefore the regional government will concentrate on developing this hydrological resource.

All international organizations are promoting water reuse. According to the World Health Organisation water reuse should be included in every water cycle in order to diminish pressure on water resources. In the future Catalonia wants to use more treated waste water for various purposes, blogs Maria José Meseguer Penalva from the environmental law company Terraqui.

World leader
At the moment water reuse is still more expensive compared to other resources. Because of the price implementing reused water stays behind. Catalonia is planning to invest in research and development and will promote the use treated wastewater. The regional government targets to become a world leader as it comes to water reuse.
