UN-Water conference in Zaragoza was focusing on action

In January more than 300 participants from United Nations agencies, experts, representatives of the business community, governmental and non-governmental organizations gathered in Zaragoza in Spain. Their goal was to plan the next steps to bring the agenda on water and sanitation into action. This is the last year of the International Decade for Action ‘Water for Life’ so planning the implementation is crucial.

From 15 to 17 January experts were presenting tools for implementation in the fields financing, technology, capacity development and governance Frameworks. The participants also prepared the annual road map for World Water Day 2015, with the theme ‘water and sustainable development’. The post-2015 international agenda for water will be decided in 2015.

Aziza Akhmouch from the OECD Water Governance Programme was one of the moderators. She was hoping to ‘diagnose the most critical governance challenges and identify the needed tools to set-up enabling multi-stakeholder governance frameworks for achieving the water development goals’. Paul Reig from the World Resources Institute was expecting ‘tools and guidelines that will be available in the public domain based on the experience of different stakeholder groups in using those for their own purposes.’
