The SUNDANSE project, a 48-month Horizon Europe initiative involving 19 partners across 10 countries, addresses the critical disruption of sediment balance in the Danube River-Black Sea system. Since the late 19th century, human interventions, including hydropower dams, riverbed straightening, and navigation projects, have altered water flow, leading to increased flood risks, habitat loss, and sediment accumulation. Currently, approximately 20% of European water bodies are adversely affected by such barriers, which stifle biodiversity and reduce sediment delivery to the Black Sea.
To resolve these challenges, SUNDANSE aims to develop a comprehensive Sediment Management Handbook. This resource will provide stakeholders with holistic, validated models and proven solutions to restore sediment quantity, quality, and flow. By bridging the gap between theoretical research and practical implementation, the project supports the EU’s “Mission to restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030”, offering a scalable blueprint for sediment management applicable to river basins throughout Europe.
The SUNDANSE project won the Sustainability Champion title at the 2025 .eu Web Awards.
